Many of the principles learned over the past decade for improving infection control within operating rooms and managing the use of these rooms can provide very important ideas of how to reduce the risks of micro-organism contamination and transmission in our operating rooms.

They give us guidance and evidence of how attention to simple, practical practices may have a dramatic impact on reducing the risks of transmission of SARS-CoV-2 and other micro-organisms in our operating room environments.

Editor’s Note: In the September 2020 issue of the Journal of Clinical Anesthesia, Dexter and colleagues address perioperative considerations for operating room management for ambulatory surgery during the COVID-19 pandemic. While the authors provide a thorough perspective, their suggestions may not be applicable globally given an institution’s specific pandemic burden, resource availability, and hospital logistics. Further trials may validate the authors’ opinions on resuming surgery during this pandemic.
